Description
Creo Parametric 12.4.0.0 has enhanced the import of STEP files by automatically determining the correct model type – Part or Assembly – based on the file being imported.
- STEP Assembly – By default, the model type is set to Assembly. A new assembly is created with the defined structure, and components are displayed in the graphics window and listed in the model tree. You can change the type to Part, which creates a new multibody part with a defined body for each assembly component.

A new configuration option, step_assembly_import_type — assembly*, part., allows setting the default model type to assembly or part.
- STEP Part – The default model type is Part. If the STEP part is a multibody part, the default changes to Assembly, and bodies are exploded into a flat subassembly structure. Setting the model type to Part imports it as a true multibody part.

A new configuration option has been created to control the model type for a multibody STEP part: step_multibody_part_import_type – assembly*, part.
STEP assemblies containing multi-body parts can now be maintained through a new STEP import profile option. You can set this option during the import operation. Go to STEP – Import Profile > Topology and select Maintain multibody structure of assembly components.
Maintaining Multibody Structures – A new STEP import profile option, Maintain multibody structure of assembly components, allows STEP assemblies containing multibody parts to retain their structure. When selected, multibody components are imported as multibody parts; when cleared, they are exploded into flat subassemblies. This option is controlled by the configuration step_add_import_model_to_asm — yes. no*.
Benefits
Importing a STEP assembly as a multibody part improves workflow flexibility in Creo Parametric. Users can preserve multibody structures during import, control the desired assembly or part layout, and enhance interoperability between different CAD systems, reducing the need for manual restructuring.
