Traditional musicians love beat up and old instruments as much as they love the old tunes. Players treasure their 100-year-old fiddles and mid-century guitars for what they say is the superior tone that can only come from hard playing and natural materials that are no longer widely available.

The funny thing is, when these same players plug in, they drop the reverence for the weathered and the old and they use the best-engineered electronics they can get. That’s because they know that the wrong pickup, preamp, or microphone can rob an instrument of its rich tone, promote feedback, and add noise to the line.
